Chapter 13: Her List
I sat Darius on the third step of the staircase and stood on the floor in front of him.
That put our eyes level for the first time.
The townhouse was dark except for the lamp I had left on in the kitchen.
Upstairs, thirty black D's waited on the bedroom wall.
"Your collar's folded," I said.
It was not folded.
I reached up with both hands and smoothed the edge of it anyway, and my knuckles dragged down the side of his throat.
He swallowed under my touch.
"Thank you," he said.
"I'm going to tell you something, and I need you to let me finish."
"Yes, ma'am," he said.
"Don't ma'am me. This is serious."
He pressed his lips together over the gap in his teeth, and I loved him a little for trying.
"I have a list," I said.
"A list."
"I've been carrying it around since Sunday morning. I never said it out loud, because nobody ever asked me what I wanted."
