Chapter 17: Reverse
I had strung the Christmas lights in the bedroom window myself, standing on the stepstool Darius kept in the truck.
It took me an hour, and I did not fall, and I was proud of that.
By ten o'clock on Saturday night the window was a square of small colored bulbs, red and green and a warm white.
The rest of the room was dark.
Darius came up the stairs from the shower with a towel around his hips.
He stopped in the doorway.
"You did that?"
"With my own two hands," I said.
"Where was I?"
"At a piano in Dunwoody, carrying someone's grandmother's Steinway." I patted the bed. "Come look at it from here."
My mother had asked him on the phone whether he went to church, and he had said yes, ma'am.
He had said yes ma'am to every question.
She had cried in the kitchen afterward, from relief, and made me promise not to tell him.
I did not tell him.
He sat on the bed beside me, and I pulled the towel off his hips and tossed it at the chair.
"Lie back," I said.
"Amber..."
"Against the pillows. Hands behind your head."
He lay back.
The colored lights fell on his chest in red and green patches, and I watched them move when he breathed.
