Chapter 27: Struck
The enforcer pushed the wheelchair up the middle of the floor.
People stood as he passed. Whole tables of them, without being told.
The old man didn't look at any of them.
He looked at his son.
Elden came around the High table fast, smiling, his hands out.
"Father. You should be in bed. This is a Gathering matter, and it's nearly done."
"Be quiet," the High Alpha said.
His voice was thin and dry.
It carried to the back wall anyway.
Elden stopped where he was.
The wheelchair rolled to a stop at the roll table, beside the open logbook.
The old man looked down at it for a long time.
Then he looked across the floor at me, standing between my two guards.
"You flew him," he said.
"Yes, sir."
He flinched at the words.
So did I, a second after.
"I flew up for Holloran's funeral," he said to the hall. "I stood beside his boy in the snow and told him I was sorry. My son stood on the other side of him."
He turned his head toward the far end.
"Is the boy here?"
Warrick sat at the Coldfoot table with his headset on, watching the old man's mouth.
"He can't hear you, sir," I said. "Not while your son is in the room."
The High Alpha closed his eyes for a moment.
"Roll keeper. The High page."
She turned the book on its stand to the front, where the Crewe names ran in black ink going back further than anyone's.
The last line was Elden's.
She held out her pen.
The High Alpha took it in a hand that shook so badly the ink dripped.
"Father," Elden said. "You don't need to do anything dramatic. A recording can be anything. You know what these northern packs are like."
"I know your voice," the old man said. "I taught you to read."
He put the pen to the page.
