Chapter 12: Filed
"No," he said again, on the landing, and he didn't touch me.
I stood with my badge in my fist and my back against the cinderblock, and I told him the reasons in order.
The log, the policy, the lie I had written six times that afternoon.
He listened to all of it with his head bent and his big hands open.
"I hear you," he said at the end. "Go home, Renee."
"That's my line."
"Then say it."
I didn't.
He went down the stairs, and I heard the door at the bottom close.
I stayed on the landing until the light timer clicked off and left me in the dark.
I did not sleep that night.
On Tuesday I came in at 8:30 with a coat over the scarf and a draft of my denial in my bag.
My desk was clear and my screen was dark.
At 8:41 the email came.
It was from the HR generalist, to me only, with Kyle copied.
Renee, thank you for your time yesterday.
Kyle Janssen's disclosure under Policy 4.2 was received this morning at 8:02.
