Chapter 16: The Court
"Come at nine," I said. "Use the back door. Park around the block."
"All of us?"
"All nine of you. Wear flat shoes and bring your gloves."
I hung up.
Emmett was sitting up against the brass bed with the quilt around his waist and his hair sticking up on one side.
"The court?" he said.
"The court. The ball's tomorrow night, and they can't bow."
"Margot's court."
"My court," I said. "They were always mine."
"I'll make coffee," he said. "A lot of it."
They came at nine, one car at a time.
Nine young women in leggings and sweatshirts, with white kid gloves in their purses.
The queen came last.
She was twenty-two, a senior at the college, with a long dark ponytail and mascara from crying still under her eyes.
Her father drove her.
He was a big gray man in a fleece vest with a bank's logo on it.
He looked at my ballroom like he was adding it up.
"I'll wait in the car," he said.
"You'll freeze in the car," Gussie said. "Sit by the piano and eat a biscuit."
He sat by the piano and ate a biscuit.
