Chapter 13: Not Like This
"Mine," I said.
The rain was coming down so hard it bounced off the hoods of the cars.
"Don't play with me, Ris."
"You asked whose it is. It's mine."
"You know what I'm asking."
"The eighth of October," I said. "You can count. I taught you."
His grip tightened until my fingers went numb.
He looked back at the ballroom doors, then at me.
His voice dropped into the one he used on men who owed him money.
"Here's what happens. Tomorrow you get on the noon ferry. My lawyer has a house in Maine. You go there and you have it quietly. For everybody's sake."
"For your wedding photos, you mean."
"You are not having my child on this island in front of three hundred people who just watched that."
"I'm not going to Maine."
"You'll go if I put you on the boat."
He started walking, and he took me with him.
The drivers under their umbrellas looked away, every one of them. They knew whose arm that was.
Then headlights swung across the lot.
Zeke got out and left the door hanging open.
He walked straight through the rain and stepped in between us, so close that Orson had to let go of me or hit him.
Orson let go.
"She said she isn't going," Zeke said.
Orson looked up at him.
Zeke had two inches on him. Orson had forty pounds and ten years of men doing what he said.
"Hesketh's driver," Orson said. "Get back in your car."
"No."
Then he laughed, short and ugly.
"Oh," he said. "I see."
"You don't see anything."
"Two months in a car outside her window." Orson looked past his shoulder at me. "You always did bring home strays, Ris."
"Go back to your party, Orson."
"This isn't done."
"It was done on the eighth of October. You said so."
