Chapter 19: Dumpster
I was out of the truck before Mavis had it in park.
The trooper by the cruiser stepped in front of me.
"Ma'am, this is private property."
"Those are my father's."
Emmeline called down from the top of them, sweet as cake.
"Oh, let her through, officer. It's only trash."
He let me through.
Up close it was worse.
All three boxes had gone in. Two had split. Photos were sliding loose in the rain between a broken lamp and a bag of plaster.
My father on the Hannah Dell's deck, laughing at something. My father in his ugly hat at the Blessing of the Fleet.
I put my hands on the steel edge.
"Honey, you're pregnant," Mavis said behind me. "Let the boys do it."
I climbed in.
It was waist-deep in wet cardboard and broken drywall.
I picked up photographs one at a time and put each inside my coat against my stomach.
Above me, I heard Emmeline laugh.
I looked up.
She had come down two steps and was holding her phone out, filming me.
