Chapter 18: Say It
Elias put the box down.
He set it on the floor of the fourth-floor corridor, slowly, the plant upright and the photograph face up, and straightened with his hands empty.
"You missed the nine o'clock," he said.
"I know."
"I stood in your gallery for ninety minutes," Elias said.
"I know that too. I felt you."
Damon crossed the six feet between them.
He was still in his scrubs, with the mask hanging at his throat.
He took Elias's face in both hands, as he had held it in the kitchen on the third night.
Down the corridor a nurse stopped, looked, and walked the other way.
"I'm saying it now," Damon said. "Standing up. I'm not good at it, so listen the first time."
"I'm listening."
"I made rules at twenty-two," Damon said. "Never fall in love. Never marry. Never spend a night."
"I know your rules."
"You broke every one," Damon said. "You broke them without once raising your voice."
His thumbs shook against Elias's cheekbones, and he kept them there.
"I want you in my bed. I want you in my kitchen at midnight, eating my food."
He took a breath.
"I want you in every year I've got left, and the next ten at the least," he said.
"I don't want to be told which of us is leaving."
"Damon," Elias said.
"I don't want you gone. I never did. I wanted you so badly I hit you."
His voice cracked.
"I am in love with you, you stubborn Norwegian ass. Say you heard it."
Elias's grey eyes had filled.
"I heard it."
"Good," Damon said.
"Say it again."
"Later," Damon said. "I'm going to say it a lot of ways first."
He took Elias by the lapel and turned him.
