Chapter 7: Moira
Damon would have given the entire patent fund to be somewhere else.
He sat on Elias's lap in the back of a parked car, with his scrub trousers around his knees and Elias's come running down his thigh.
Moira Doyle stood outside the window with two paper cups.
"Don't move," Elias said calmly in his ear.
"I'm going to die."
"You're not going to die," Elias said.
"I'm going to die and I'm going to haunt this garage."
Elias reached past him, hit the button, and the window slid down three inches.
"Good morning, Moira."
"Mr. Thorsen."
Moira passed one cup through the gap without a flicker.
"That's for you. The other's for the Doctor, with two sugars, because he's had a night."
She slid the second through, and Damon took it with a hand that was visibly shaking.
Moira Doyle had run his night OR for eleven years.
She was fifty-two, Queens-born, five foot four, widowed, and she had once told a visiting senator to wash his hands or leave.
She looked in at Damon for a long, level second, and her face did not change.
"You were good in there tonight," she said. "The boy had no chance with anyone else's hands. Remember that."
Damon opened his mouth and found he had nothing.
"I'll be in OR 2 for the cleanup," Moira said. "Take your time. I've seen worse."
She straightened.
"I have not told a soul and I won't. Mind the seat, Mr. Thorsen, the leather stains."
She walked away across the garage in her puffy coat.
