"I have something to say," Jae-ryeong told the envoy.
"I have not sheltered a poison master. I hired a healer."
Pil-gu's head came up sharply.
"A healer," the envoy said.
"From Hwangsan, a man who treats the frost sickness."
"I was taken ill at my father's memorial."
"I would be dead if he had not come."
"His name?"
"He wouldn't give me one. Healers of that kind don't."
It was thin.

So could the envoy, who looked at him for a long moment with dry, dark eyes.
"Do you offer him as a witness?" the envoy said.
"I offer my own word as lord of Cheongrim."
"The word of a lord who cannot hold his own cup."
"Yes," Jae-ryeong said. "That one."
The hall went quiet.
At last the envoy picked up his horsehair hat.
"The Alliance Assembly meets in ten days on Mount Gyeryong," he said.
"You will appear before it, with this healer, and answer for yourself."
"If the healer cannot be produced, or is found to be of the Nine Thorns, the sentence is death for you and for him."
