Chapter 8: Rice

Do-yun cooked lunch for three, and nobody died.

For ten years Do-yun's rice had been a martial art, so that was worth noting.

"It's burnt on the bottom," he said cheerfully, setting the pot on the low table. "That's the good part. Poison master, sit."

Seol stood in the doorway.

He wore a plain grey servant's coat, and his silver hair was bound up under a cloth.

"I'm not hungry."

"You haven't eaten since you came," Do-yun said.

"Five days of you leaping over my lord's window, and not a grain of rice."

"I eat."

"What do you eat?"

Seol opened his mouth.

He closed it.

"Tea," he said.

"That's not a food."

"It's a leaf."

"Sit down, or I tell everyone you were in the kitchen stealing pickles."

"I wasn't."

"I'll say you were."

Seol sat.

He folded himself onto the cushion with his gloves in his lap.

Do-yun put a bowl in front of him and heaped burnt rice and a spoonful of pickled radish on top.

Seol ate one bite.

Then he looked at the bowl with open astonishment.

"It's sour," he said.

"It's radish."

"It's awful. It's wonderful."

Jae-ryeong laughed so hard he had to put down his chopsticks.

Do-yun puffed up.

"I used to be a poison master's enemy," he said grandly. "Now I'm his cook. Life is strange."

"I was never your enemy," Seol said, with his mouth full.

"You tried to kill my lord."

"I tried very slowly."
