Chapter 7: Broken Cup

At seven the next morning, the four of us stood in the Hartwell kitchen and watched my mother cry on television.

Margaret held a coffee pot.

Levi stood by the counter with his sleeves rolled to the elbow.

The cook had her flour-dusted hands pressed flat on the island.

On the little screen above the stove, Lorna sat in a pale blue blazer on a morning-show couch with a box of tissues in her lap.

"I raised her from a baby," she told the host. "I sat up with her through every fever. And now people with money have taken her away from me, and she's confused and frightened."

"Confused?" the host said.

"Cora has a history of anxiety. She's been told she's a heiress. Wouldn't you believe it, if you'd been through what she has?"

The video of the party flashed up beside her. My own face, on my knees.

"I was upset that night," Lorna said, and her voice broke beautifully. "I said things a mother should never say. But I would never hurt my child."

"That's a lie," I said.

"It's a good one," said the cook.

"I want to hit something."

"Hit this," said Margaret, and slid me a plate.

It was her late husband's family china, white with a gold rim.

I looked at the plate, then at her.

"Mrs. Hartwell."

"Margaret."

"Are you giving me permission to break your good china?"
