Chapter 28: Grandmother

Gran didn't get up.

She held the baby a little tighter on her knee and adjusted the velvet hat.

"She's asleep," Gran said.

"I'll wait."

"You'll wait standing up," Gran said. "Until you've said what you came to say."

Evan's mother looked at me.

I leaned the broom against the counter.

I didn't help her.

She stood on the mat with the snow melting off her shoulders, and for a long moment I thought she'd turn around and walk back out into it.

She didn't.

"I wrote you a check to leave Boston," she said. "In this woman's front room."

Gran said nothing.

"I told you, in front of eight of my friends, that throwing your grandmother out of this building was a wedding present. I thought it was funny. I thought you were a girl with a crush." She stopped.

Her voice didn't break.

I think she'd practiced it in the snow.

"I believed Madeline because it was easier than believing my son had lied to me for seven years," she said. "And because you didn't come from anybody. That was the real reason. I'm not proud of it, but it's the truth, and I'm done telling the other kind."
