Chapter 27: The Hallway

Suffolk Superior Court was a gray stone building on Pemberton Square with metal detectors at the door and a line out into the cold.

I wore my gray coat over my gray sweater.

I'd been told not to lift anything heavier than a gallon of milk, so Conor carried my bag through security.

"It's a wallet and a granola bar," I said.

"It's a very important granola bar."

Moira had taken the day off and come in her church coat.

She'd never been to church in it that I knew of.

"I wear it to funerals and court," she said. "Same thing, different snacks."

My father was already inside.

He was sitting alone on a wooden bench in the hallway outside Courtroom 808, in his navy suit, with his hands folded.

He stood when he saw us.

He moved carefully, holding his left side.

"You came," he said.

"I'm the victim. I get a seat."

"I'm the husband." He almost smiled. "Apparently I also get a seat. Just not the one she saved for me."

The courtroom was wood paneling and fluorescent light.

The reporters had taken the whole back row.

I sat in the second row on the left, behind the prosecutor's table.

Moira sat on one side of me and Conor on the other.

My father sat down on the end of our bench, next to Conor.

Not across the aisle, behind the defense table, where her lawyer had left a space for family.

My mother came in through a side door at nine-fifteen with her lawyer.
