Chapter 14: The Stubs
Linchuan could still taste tea and cold pork on his mouth when he opened the library door.
He had a rule for moments like this one: hold the face still and let the hands work.
He poured tea for the family doctor.
His hands were not quite steady, and the doctor, who had known him since he was nine, politely did not look.
The family doctor was fifty-five, stooped and tidy, with a briefcase he held on his knees.
"I should have come sooner," he said. "Second Uncle visited my clinic on Monday."
"He asked me to withdraw my finding about Yuan's blood type. He said it would be kinder to the family."
"What did you say?"
"That a blood type is not a kindness." The doctor opened the briefcase with care.
"Then I went home and looked up the laboratory that issued his report. The Huaxia Genetic Centre."
"The accreditation number printed on it belongs to a dental implant clinic in Wuxi."
Anzhi, who had been sitting very straight on the sofa, said, "A dental clinic?"
"It has never run a paternity test. And there is a second matter."
He laid a single sheet on the table.
It was the second report's cover page. The collection line read: Sample collected 2 October. Subject: Wei Anzhi. Source: hair.
Linchuan read it twice.
"The second of October," he said.
"Yes."
"On the second of October, Wei Anzhi was in Siyang."
"Selling feed," said Anzhi. "I was weighing barley. I got into the car on the fourth."
"Then the hair belongs to someone else," said Linchuan, and found that his voice had gone quite cold.
"And Second Uncle's people knew exactly which date they were writing. They began this before Wei Anzhi was ever in the house."
