Chapter 12: What Dex Said
Dex sat up against the headboard with the sheet over his lap.
He didn't look at me.
"The luck isn't real," he said.
"I made it up."
The room went still.
Bram turned his head slowly on the pillow.
"What?" I said.
"After the cooler.
After the first night, when I told you I'd start.
I wasn't sure I'd start.
I only said it so you'd laugh."
He rubbed his face with both hands.
"Then the coach put me in.
And I had two assists.
And in the dining room the next morning, everybody was asking Mercer how he'd done it."
"What did he say?"
"He said nothing.
He just sat there, looking like a man who'd been hit by a truck and liked it."
Dex dropped his hands.
"So I said it was the milk.
I said it was luck.
I said every player who got a turn would play the best game of his life.
I said it because I wanted my turn, Harlow."
He finally looked at me.
His eyes were wet.
"I didn't want to just be the guy who got lucky once.
I wanted a reason you'd keep letting me in."
I didn't speak.
I felt something very cold move through me, and under it something warmer, and I didn't know which one would win.
