Chapter 18: Moon Fire

Torin's POV

The fourteenth moon came up over the north ridge twenty-two days after Davin raised his call and nobody answered.

I watched it from the trees.

Brynn had asked me to.

"If they see you at my shoulder, they'll say I picked a side because of who I'm sleeping with," she had said that morning.

She had been pulling her hair into a braid.

"I want them to choose it without you."

"I'll be at the edge."

"As a wolf. Where I can find you."

So I lay in the pines in my grey coat with my chin on my paws.

The nearest fire was a hundred feet away, and I could see the whole clearing.

Three hundred wolves stood in their places.

The envoy sat at her plain table with two elders of neighboring packs beside her.

The moon ledger lay open in front of them.

Orrin was in the first row.

He wore his charcoal coat and his gloves, and he watched the dais with his chin raised.

Davin stood on the stone with his hands clasped.

He had not slept properly in three weeks, and it showed in his face.

Sable stood alone below the steps.

Nobody stood next to her.

The envoy opened the hearing the way the old law said.

She named the seat and the Moon's daughter.

She read the ledger line once more, so nobody could say they had not heard it.

"The vine was unmade without the Moon's daughter's word," she said. "The seat holds until this moonrise. Miss Buchanan, you have not said what you will do."
