Chapter 5: Under My Roof

"Cut him loose," I said.

The bigger enforcer looked at Edda, then at me.

"Alpha's orders, Miss Buchanan."

"Then the Alpha can come down here and say it to me."

I picked the bread knife up off the table and walked across the cabin.

Nobody stopped me, because I was still the promised Luna and nobody knew yet what that meant tonight.

I cut the rope on Torin's wrists in two strokes.

He rubbed his hands together and watched me, and the split lip made his smile crooked.

"I'm told the law allows a promised Luna to name her own guard," I said, loud enough for the porch. "Edda?"

"It does," Edda said. "Sworn guard, until the vow is spoken or the Council has ruled. He stands under her protection, and any wolf who lays a hand on him lays it on her."

"Then I name him."

Torin went very still.

"Brynn," he said quietly. "Don't. You don't know what it costs you."

"It costs me nothing I wasn't about to lose." I turned to the enforcers. "Torin Ashe is my sworn guard from this moment until the fourteenth moon. Tell Davin that."

"He's an exile," the smaller one said. "The law says death on return."

"He didn't return. He came to the moonrise to witness. The envoy saw him." I kept my voice level. "Take it up with her."

Neither of them moved.

Footsteps crunched on the path outside, and a torch came bobbing down through the pines.

Davin walked into the circle of light with his jacket open and three more wolves behind him.

He stopped when he saw the cut rope on the floor.
