Chapter 15: The Last Moon Wolf

Sorrel's POV

My mother sat propped against the iron headboard with a blanket up to her chin.

Her white hair had been brushed by someone, and I guessed it was my daughter.

My daughter sat on the end of the bed with a bowl of soup and a spoon, in charge.

"Grandma has to eat all of it," she informed me. "It's the rule."

"I'm eating," my mother said, and she did, one obedient spoonful at a time.

My younger son was under the bed with his owl.

My older son sat cross-legged on the floor, watching her face.

The three brothers stood along the wall because there was nowhere to sit.

They looked too big for the room.

"Out, please," my mother said to the children. "The grown-ups need to talk."

"Why?" said my older son.

"Because I'm going to say some ugly things about your grandfather."

"We know he's bad," said my daughter. "We voted."

"Then go and vote on something else."

Gareth took them out by the hands.

He crouched to my younger son in the doorway, and my son looked at him and walked right past with his owl held high.

Gareth watched him go.

I made myself look back at my mother.

"Tell me," I said.

She put the bowl down and folded her hands.

They were thin and spotted, and they didn't shake.

"I came to this pack at twenty-six, with you inside me, running from another one," she said. "I told them I was an omega."

"I was the last Moon wolf, and I had learned young to hide it."

"I sealed you the day you were born, so nobody would ever smell what you were."
