Chapter 12: Scarf

"I'll do it alone," Niko said.

It was Tuesday night, and he was walking the length of the lodge floor with his hands in his hair.

"By voice. By scent. Ninety wolves, one at a time, and I don't need Ilmari to hold my elbow."

"You'll do it," I said, "and I'll be standing next to you."

He stopped.

"In the open. Hood down. Where the whole pack can see me beside you."

"They'll say the Alpha needs a woman to hold him up."

"Let them say it." I put my back against the door.

"I won't be the reason it looks like you're hiding. You'll walk, and I'll stand in the light, and neither of us is ashamed."

He looked at the floor.

Then, slowly, he started to smile.

"You've gotten bossy."

"I'm Luna."

"I noticed." He came toward me. "I like it."

I held up a hand.

"Wait."

I had his grey wool scarf in my fist, the long one he wore every morning.

I'd taken it off the peg while he paced.

"Sit on the bed."

He lifted an eyebrow, but he sat.

I stepped between his knees and wound the scarf around his head, twice, over his eyes, and knotted it at the back.

His breath caught.

"Now you're like me," I said. "Nobody sees you either."

"Tuuli."

"I'm in charge."

"Yes, Luna," he said, low and rough, and my whole body lit up.

I pushed him back on the mattress and climbed over him.

I undressed him slowly, because I could.

His shirt first, up over the thick shoulders, then his belt, then his jeans, with his cock springing free and hard against his stomach.

I ran my palm up the length of it and he shuddered all over.

"Don't move your hands," I said.

"I won't."

"Tell me what you know."

I peeled off my own clothes, one piece at a time, and let each one fall where he could hear it.
