Chapter 23: The Mark

The Skarn stones stood above the river on a shelf of black rock.

There were nine of them, taller than a man, worn smooth by the wind.

At first light every wolf in Hartfell was there.

Six hundred of them stood in the frost with their breath smoking, in their furs and their working coats, with children on their shoulders.

Kjell was in the front row.

He had put on his best jacket, and he was already crying.

Behind him were the cooks, in their aprons, with flour on their sleeves, because Kjell had told them nobody ate until it was done.

I wore my grey dress.

I wore my mother's brooch and my glasses and the Moot ring on my thumb.

I did not wear a cloak.

I wanted to feel the cold.

Torin walked beside me up the shelf, bareheaded, with his braid over one shoulder and his hand around mine.

At the tallest stone he stopped, and turned me to face the pack.

The wind dropped.

I had never been looked at by so many people who wanted me there.

"I have been traded once," I said.
