Chapter 23: Charges
I did not wait for Jack to answer.
I took the microphone back from his hand, and he let me.
"Mr. Ellsworth," I said. "You're late."
Wyatt's smile slipped.
"My true statement was filed on Sunday morning at six, before your lawyers had finished their coffee."
"It is in the Deputy Attorney General's hands, and it is signed.
"Everything I swore for you is in there as false, and it says who paid for the lie."
I looked at the room.
"Play my old statement to a jury, Wyatt. Please. I'll read the part about the forty thousand dollars out loud."
Somebody at the back laughed, and then clapped.
It was one pair of hands, and then it was the table of veterans, and then it was everybody.
Wyatt turned his face away from the sound as the agents led him out.
The second week after the gala, I stood in a federal courtroom in a gray suit with my hands folded in front of me.
