Chapter 23: Roses for Two
Perry took his thumb out from under the flap.
On Brianne's new front desk there was a cup of markers for the kids' name tags.
He took out a black one and wrote across the front of the envelope in capital letters.
RETURN TO SENDER.
Then he put it in the drawer under the desk and went back to making coffee.
On Tuesday night, the retired mailman came to adult beginners in his rented tap shoes.
After class Perry held the envelope out to him.
The mailman read the front.
Then he read the return address, and his eyebrows went up.
"I'm retired, son."
"You still know where the box is."
The mailman looked at him for a second.
Then he tucked it inside his coat.
"I'll drop it on the way home," he said. "Heel, toe and step."
"Arms aren't part of it."
"Arms aren't part of it," the mailman agreed, and went out into the snow.
Perry never asked him if he did.
Spring came in April, all at once.
One week it was slush, and the next the trees on Irving Park were green.
In the middle of April a girl came into the studio with a car seat.
