Chapter 5: A Kind Sister

Odessa came up the nursery stair the next morning with a basket on her arm and half the keep behind her.

A page carried her shawl.

Two maids carried nothing and looked pleased to be there.

I was sitting on the floor with Ewan, rolling a ball of yarn across the boards for his horse to chase.

She stopped in the open doorway, one gloved hand to her heart.

"Linnet," she said, and her eyes filled.

She crossed the room in four quick steps and knelt, and for a moment I thought she meant to hug me.

"Thank you," Odessa said to the whole room, and her voice rang. "Whatever she did, she saved this child's life. I will never forget it."

The maids sighed.

The page wiped his nose.

She took my hand in both her gloved ones and squeezed, and I felt the hard lump of the ring under the kid leather.

I took my hand back.

"You're kind," I said.

"I'm your sister." She looked down at my palms, the old pale scars, and her smile held a half breath too long. "Oh, your poor hands. Gloves would spare you that."

"They would."

She turned the smile on Ewan.

"And here's my little prince. I've brought honey cakes."

Ewan said nothing.

He had said very little since the night before, only whispered yes and no to me.

He put his horse in his lap and looked at the basket.

"Take them down to the kitchen," I told the nearest maid. "I'll fetch his food myself."

"Linnet," Odessa said gently. "It's only a cake."

"Then it'll keep."

She laughed softly, as at a friend's joke, and the maids laughed with her.

Her eyes did not.

She stood and shook out her skirts.

"Wait for me downstairs," she told her train. "I'd like a moment with my sister."
