Chapter 23: Barefoot
"Because you came out of a plate, baby," Mom said, and kissed her on the forehead.
Callie looked at her for a long second.
"You remembered me," she said. "The whole time. I could hear you, Mama."
"Every minute," Mom said.
Callie put her arms around her and held on, right there on the church steps in the broken glass.
On Sunday Jesse's mother had all of us to dinner on Spring Street after church.
She set the table with her good dishes, and she made Jesse sit at the head.
"That was your daddy's chair," she told him. "You earned it."
His brother sat beside him and ate four pieces of fried chicken.
He was seventeen at the table and twenty-nine on paper, and he thought that was the funniest thing in the world.
"I can buy beer," he kept saying. "Legally. Jesse, I can buy beer."
"You can't," Jesse said.
During the peach cobbler somebody knocked on the screen door.
It was the county sheriff, in his church clothes, with his hat in his hands.
He was the same man who'd taken Jesse's badge in 2015.
