Chapter 14: The NICU
"A grudge," I said into the phone.
"A documented grudge," my lawyer said. "Their word. It's garbage, but it's well-dressed garbage. A judge has to look at it."
I hung up and sat at my desk for a minute.
Then I went downstairs to the Mercy cafeteria and bought Andrew a very large cookie, because I didn't know what else to do.
He read the motion that afternoon in his closet office.
He read his own resignation letter, three years old, stapled to the back.
He took his glasses off and didn't put them back on.
"They're right," he said. "I do have a grudge."
"That's not funny."
"It's a little funny." He rubbed his eyes. "I swabbed your cheek with a notary watching. They'll still say I did it wrong. That's how this works."
"Then we'll prove you did it right."
"Beth."
"I'm a registrar. Proving things were done right is my entire personality."
He almost smiled.
That night, at ten, my phone rang from a number I didn't know.
"It's Philippa."
Her voice was flat, but faster.
