Chapter 13: The Loose Stair
Odalie picked the candle back up and held it under Ianthe's chin.
"Seventeen days," she said. "Ianthe, I told that wolf I practise kissing on my pillow."
"I know. I was in the doorway."
Odalie put her free hand over her face.
"He was the Duke of Norvaine!" she hissed. "Why didn't you tell him you knew?"
"Because a man who'd heard all that would have walked out of the kitchen," Ianthe said.
"He'd have been ashamed, and he'd have stopped listening, and I'd have stopped talking."
"A wolf couldn't walk out. A wolf had to lie by the fire and hear it."
"So you kept on telling him things. On purpose."
"Every word after the fourth night."
"The night before the ball," Odalie said. "You went out. I heard the side door."
"I went to the kennels behind Morcaine House," Ianthe said. "That part I'll tell him myself."
"Why?"
"Because he'll want to be angry about it, and he should get to be."
Odalie made a small noise.
"That is the most romantic thing I have ever heard, and I have read everything."
