Chapter 18: The Dress Wasn't Mine
The gown required somebody else to help a woman get into it.
I held it against myself in the kitchen while Deborah counted the fastenings.
Osric came down wearing yesterday's sweater.
I had slept with him, and seeing him in our doorway made me happy.
The card on the box made me furious.
Both feelings arrived together, and I refused to discard either.
He saw the card before I had to show him.
"I didn't send that," he said.
"It came from your house."
"I'll find out why."
I put the gown down on the table.
Deborah moved the butter first.
"Before you do," I said, "did you expect me to come back with you?"
He looked at the dress, then at me.
I watched him choose between a quick defense and the harder answer.
