Chapter 15: Equal

"Get out of my father's house," I said.

"It's a fishing cabin." Imogen smiled. "And I'm not staying. I came to bring you something."

She slid a small tin across the table.

Inside lay a single black lace strap, folded flat.

"You left the set at the hot spring," she said. "I thought you might want it back."

I took the tin and shut the lid.

"What do you want?"

"Garrick is dying."

Her voice was as soft as ever, and her eyes were dry.

"His wolf has gone. His warriors are talking about who should take the seat, and there are four names, and none of them is mine. I need him alive and bonded."

"He's not bonded to me anymore."

"You cut it. You can mend it."

"No."

"Then you'll listen to what I tell the packs." She stood and smoothed her skirt. "That a woman with a wolf nobody knew about spent three years beside him, and now he is wasting away. I'll say you were slow-poisoning him. People will believe it. They want a reason."

My hands had gone cold.

"Nobody will believe that."

"They'll believe the widow who stood by him." She pulled on her gloves. "Bond him again tonight, quietly, and I'll never say a word. You have until dawn."

She walked out into the snow, and she did not hurry.

I sat in the dark and didn't sleep.

At first light I walked to the Moon Stone, where the Blackwater council met on the first day of every month.

I came through the pines on the north side and stopped behind a cedar.

Thirty or so Blackwater wolves stood in a half circle around the Stone.
