Chapter 24: The Other Bed
For three years I'd watched Damon Strade run board meetings, buy buildings and fire men twice his age without blinking.
I had never once seen him panic.
"Hospital," he said to the driver. "Now. The one in Beverly Hills."
"Damon."
"Run the lights. I'll pay for every one of them."
"Damon." I grabbed his wrist. "Breathe."
"I'm breathing."
"You're not. You've gone white."
He looked down at me and the statue in my lap and the wet black velvet.
"Juno, you're in labor in my car."
"I know," I said. "I'm the one doing it."
The first contraction hit as we turned onto Sunset.
I squeezed his hand hard enough to grind the bones.
He didn't make a sound.
He just held on and said my name, over and over, quietly.
The private hospital on the quiet street in Beverly Hills was lit up gold.
Word had gotten out somehow before we did.
There were photographers on the sidewalk, the same sidewalk, the same steps.
The driver slowed at the side entrance.
"There's a back way in, sir. Through the garage."
Damon and I looked at each other.
"Front," we said.
Damon carried me up the front steps in my black velvet, with the statue still in my hand, because I wouldn't let go of it.
