Chapter 20: Timothy's Last Move

Leon opened his mouth to answer me, and his father spoke over him.

"He releases nothing."

Timothy had come around the end of the council bench.

His voice was no longer warm.

It came out low and heavy, and I felt it in my ears and my teeth, as I had felt it every day for four years.

It was the Alpha's voice.

"This council has named a warden of another pack as the biter of my son's wife," Timothy said. "A stranger who crossed my land, broke my wolf's arm, and put his teeth in a claimed Luna. By the old law, a rogue who bites a bride that is not his is put down."

Nobody breathed.

"East watch," Timothy said. "Take him."

The word went through the hall, and I watched it land.

Two big wolves in grey coats stood by the door, the ones who had stood on the porch the night before.

Their faces tightened, and they took a step.

Then another.

Crispin did not move.

He did not raise his hands, either.

He stood with the stone still in his palm and watched them come.

Leon stepped in front of him.

"Dad," he said. "Stop."

"Stand aside."

The voice struck again.

Leon's knees bent, and I saw it cost him.

His face went grey, and he took a breath, and he did not move.
