Chapter 7: Dinah's Tea

Dinah knocked on my door at eight the next morning with a tray.

I almost didn't open it.

"It's only tea," she said through the wood. "Plain black, with honey. I made it myself. I'll drink the first cup in front of you."

I opened the door.

She came in and put the tray on my dresser, and she poured two cups and drank from the first.

Her hands were not steady.

"Pat's on the landing," she said. "She wouldn't let me up the stairs until she'd checked my pockets."

"Good."

"I told her she was right to."

That made me look at her properly.

Her eyes were red, and she had not put her hair up.

She looked like someone who had not slept either.

"Timothy told me to keep Leon busy that night," Dinah said.

I put the cup down.

"I'm going to say it all at once, or I won't be able to say it," she said. "Please let me."

"Go on."

"Two days before the wedding, Timothy called me into his study. He said the claiming would be done by a family member, in private, because Leon's wolf wasn't ready. He said it was an old Ramsay custom and that it would humiliate the family if it got out. He asked me to take Leon away from the house on the night, so Leon wouldn't be tempted to interfere."

"Interfere."

"That was his word."

"And you agreed."

"I loved Leon." She said it plainly, with her chin up. "I thought you were marrying him for the pack and that none of it would ever touch you. I told myself it was kindness, that you'd never have to know. I was twenty-six and a coward."
