Chapter 25: The Raider

"They're not forged," Roan said.

"You'd know that, would you?"

"I'd know his hand." Roan picked up the fourth crow letter and held it out. "Read the last line."

His father didn't take it.

So Roan read it out himself.

"Leave the next silver with the ferryman at the ford, as before."

He put the letter down.

"The ferry still runs," he said. "The ferryman still drinks in the same inn. I'll bring you somebody who took that silver."

"The gates are sealed, boy."

"I know."

The Dunstan lord looked at him for a long moment.

"Bring me a living man who says it to my face," he said. "Then I'll believe it."

They left by the boathouse after the midnight bell.

I stood on the dark slip with Maudie and watched them lift a racing shell off the rack.

"I'm coming," I said.

"No," they both said at once.

"I can row."

"You can row," Roan said. "And at morning parade there'll be two hunters missing and a hunt to explain it. Three missing, and one of them's the girl he already watches, and he knows."

I hated that he was right.
