Chapter 5: The Assessment
Wade knocked on my bedroom door at midnight.
He had never knocked before.
I opened it in a T-shirt and nothing else.
He looked at my bare legs and then at the ceiling.
"We have to stop," he said.
"Come in."
"I mean it. I'm calling Thorsby in the morning and ending this."
"Come in, Wade."
He didn't.
He stood in the hall with his hands braced on either side of the door frame.
"Your mother is down the hall," he said. "She's my wife. She's asleep in a bed I paid for."
"I know."
"I put my cock in your mouth in front of a stranger."
"I remember," I said. "I was there."
A laugh broke out of him, short and helpless.
Then it died, and he looked at me with eyes that hurt to see.
"I'm thirty-nine years old," he said. "You're nineteen. I'm supposed to be the one who knows better."
"Then know better," I said. "And tell me you don't want it."
He opened his mouth.
He closed it.
I stepped close enough to feel the heat coming off his chest.
"Say you don't want me, and I'll shut this door and never ask again."
His throat moved.
He said nothing.
I closed the door gently on his silence, and I went back to bed smiling.
In the morning, he drove me to Thorsby's office without a word.
Dr. Thorsby was waiting with the lamps low and his glasses off.
"I hear there was a crisis," he said.
Wade went still.
"I haven't spoken to either of you since Tuesday," Dr. Thorsby said. "But I know what the second week feels like. The guilt arrives. It always arrives."
"I want to stop," Wade said.
"Do you?"
"Yes."
"Mallory?"
"No."
Dr. Thorsby nodded.
"Then we have a disagreement," he said. "That's useful. Wade, sit in the chair by the window."
