Chapter 5: Northfang Pays Triple

Dorian Falkner walked into my boardroom without knocking, and then he looked around and saw whose it was.

He was tall and lean, with silver-blond hair cut close and a long black coat that was dusted with snow.

He took in the table, the five Ridgeline faces and the woman at the head of it.

"Ah," he said. "So the rumor was true."

"Which rumor?" I said.

"That MOONHOUSE's owner is a woman nobody has met. I've been trying to meet her for two years."

Rafe stood up so fast that his chair hit the wall.

"Falkner," he said. "You have no business in this room."

"I have a reservation request and an open wallet," Dorian said pleasantly. "Hello, Cormack. You look terrible."

"Sit down, both of you," I said.

Neither of them did.

I took a breath and tried again.

"Mr. Falkner, you can't book the same dates as another pack's contract. This is neutral ground, and the Gathering is already sold."

"Then un-sell it."

"I just spent an hour doing the opposite."

He smiled, and it was a sharp and honest smile.

"Triple the price, Ms. Averill. Ridgeline holds the summit, I hold the bill, and nobody bleeds at the border."

"You mean Northfang would pay to host the pack it's at war with."

"I'd pay to stop the war," Dorian said. "I'd also pay to watch their faces when they hear the offer."

The heavy elder made a strangled sound.

Ward said nothing at all.

"Neutral ground means neutral," I said. "Northfang attends as a full party. You get a suite, a moon-run slot and a seat at the table, on the same terms as Ridgeline, and you pay the same rate."
