The snow started on Wednesday and did not stop for three days.
By Saturday night the farm road was gone, and the power was out all down the valley.
I had my mother's stove, a stack of his oak and a lamp.
I also had a truck at my gate.
It had been there since Thursday night, with its engine off to save the gas.
Nobody had knocked.
On the third night, I stood at my window and watched the snow build on the hood, and I could not stand it.
I put on my boots and my mother's quilt and went out.
The cold stung my face.
I waded the drift to the gate and pulled the truck door open.
Duncan sat behind the wheel in his coat with the collar up.
His lips were gray. He had his hands tucked under his arms.
"Dovie," he said. "I'm sorry. I'll go."
"You'll go where?" I said. "The road's shut."
"I didn't want you alone with no lights."
"I'm not alone," I said. "I have a stove."
"I know."
"Then what are you doing?" I said.
"Waiting," he said, "until you want me."
Something in me came loose.
"For three days?"
"I'd have waited longer."
"You sat in a truck in the snow and let me watch you," I said. "You did not come to the door."
