Chapter 22: The Note

Hanne's POV

Erik stood on Ingrid's porch with his duffel at his feet and his hood down.

He had cut his hair.

The expensive haircut was gone, and in its place was a plain short one that made him look about fifteen.

"Hi," he said.

"Hi."

"I didn't call first. I thought you'd say don't come."

"I might have."

"That's why I didn't call."

I let him in.

He stood in the kitchen with his hands in the pockets of his old jacket, looking at the crooked red stocking still taped above the window, and at Dylan, who had stood up from the table.

"You're the paramedic," Erik said.

"You're the croissant guy," Dylan said.

Erik flinched, and then his mouth twitched.

"That's fair," he said. "I deserve that one."

"Sit," Ingrid said. "There's soup."

"I'm not hungry."

"There's soup anyway."

He sat.

Ingrid put a bowl in front of him, and he ate every drop.

When he was finished he pushed the bowl aside and set the manila envelope on the table.

"I did something," he said. "I want you to read it before you say anything."

I opened it.

Inside was a loan agreement, four pages, stapled.

The borrower was Erik Paul Halvorsen.

The lender was a credit union in Duluth.

The amount was thirty thousand dollars, and under it was a second paper, a promissory note, in plain words, signed and dated.

I, Erik Halvorsen, owe Hanne Marie Halvorsen sixty-one thousand, four hundred dollars.
