Chapter 18: Rafe's POV: Osgood

Rafe's POV

Leland Osgood lived alone in a brick house in Squirrel Hill with the lights off.

I rang the bell at midnight, and he answered it in a bathrobe with a glass in his left hand.

"Rafael," he said, without surprise. "Come in. I thought it would be you."

The house smelled of old books and bourbon.

He took me into a study full of framed diplomas and a leather desk chair worn through at the arms.

He sat.

I stood.

The man had put me back together at twenty-one.

I had sent him a card every April for fourteen years, with a bottle of single malt in it.

"Tell me what happened," I said.

"You know what happened."

"I want to hear it from the man who did it."

He drank.

His right hand lay open on the desk and trembled on the blotter.

"I'd been at a donor dinner," he said. "Anselm's. Three courses, six wines. At nine he called me out of the dining room and said the girl was in the building."

"The donor."

"She'd already been prepped. Adelaide had done it herself." His voice went soft and strange. "She was in the pre-op bay when I came in. She wasn't afraid of me. She asked if the letter was ready. For her daughter. She said, 'You'll see she gets it, Doctor. Promise.' I said yes. I put my hand on hers."
