Chapter 20: High Water
The new moon came on the night the basin rose.
The rain had been falling in Arkansas for a week, and the Atchafalaya began to climb on Monday.
By Thursday the Henderson levee was wet to its shoulders.
The humans' flood crew had sandbagged the road and gone home to sleep.
Nobody but the pack was on the levee at midnight.
I walked up from the gravel with Bastien's hand in mine.
I had thought about leaving him at the neighbor's.
He had looked up at me with his shoulders set and said, "It's my family too," and I had not been able to say no.
He wore his rain jacket and his church shoes.
Poteau walked at his other side, and Remy walked at mine.
We came up over the top of the levee onto the road.
The whole pack stood in the dark in a half circle, a hundred and sixty people under a sky with no moon in it.
They had brought lanterns, and the light ran gold along their faces.
At the center, in front of the church door, Marguerite Thibodeaux stood in her black coat with the silk flag in her hand and Clemence at her shoulder.
The council stood behind them, twelve old men and women in black.
Anselme sat on the church step in his gray cardigan.
He lifted one hand a little as I came, and put it down.
"The Broussard girl," Marguerite said.
"You came."
"I came," I said.
"You'll want to take your place."
"I'll stand where I am."
I stopped in the middle of the road.
The water of the Atchafalaya was black and loud behind the levee, and my son's hand was in mine.
