Chapter 22: Cashier's Check
Josh climbed to my fourth floor on Wednesday evening with an envelope in both hands.
He had taken the train, because he no longer had a car.
"Cashier's check," he said at the green door. "Five thousand."
"You sold the Honda."
"A guy in Evanston paid cash. I took it straight to the bank."
I opened the envelope and read the name on the check.
It was mine, and so was the amount.
"Nine and five," I said. "That's all fourteen."
"Don't thank me." He rubbed the back of his neck. "I'm five weeks late."
Wes stood in the kitchen doorway with a dish towel over his shoulder.
"Josh," he said.
"Yeah."
"I should have come home nine years ago, whatever she'd told me."
"And I should have asked why you didn't."
They looked at each other across my small living room, two grown men with the same jaw.
Then Josh nodded once, and Wes nodded back, and that was the whole conversation.
Someone knocked hard on the open door behind him.
Meg stood there out of breath, with her hoops off and a bank letter in her fist.
"I ran from the train," she said. "I wanted to beat the nerves."
She held out the letter first.
"I called the loan company this morning. My car note is in my name now, with autopay from my own account. You've been paying it since the spring I lost my job."
"I offered."
"And I let you. I let you for two years." She pushed a second envelope into my hand. "That's nineteen hundred dollars, in cash. Four months. I'll pay the rest on the first of every month."
