Chapter 13: Sunday Dinner

My father's house in Marblehead is gray stone, with a slate roof and a lawn that runs down to the water.

I had passed it on the harbor ferry twice in my life without knowing.

"You're nervous," I told Gabriel, on the front step.

"I'm a grown man in a suit that cost four thousand dollars, standing on the porch of the most powerful shipping family in New England, about to meet your father." He straightened his tie. "I'm terrified."

"He's seventy percent teddy bear."

"And the other thirty?" he said.

"Harbormaster," I said.

The door opened before I could knock.

Ulysses Norcross stood in it in a cardigan, with his cane, and his gray eyes went to Gabriel and stayed.

Behind him a small, stern woman in an apron was already moving a vase of flowers off the hall table.

She had kept his house for thirty years.

"Mr. Norcross," Gabriel said, and held out his hand.

"Maitland. Your father sold my chandlery its washers, back when your father was alive." My father shook it hard. "He was the best salesman on Dorchester Avenue. Come in. Both of you."

The dining room had a table for twelve with three places laid at one end.

There was a photograph on the sideboard in a silver frame.

I stopped in front of it.
