Chapter 11: Page Forty
Nobody raised a glass.
The Don stood with his arm out and his cup in the air, and eighty people looked at their plates.
"Father," Gianluca said. "I'd like to say something before we drink."
He had risen from his chair.
"Sit down, Gianluca."
"It's about the girl you're toasting."
The Don lowered his glass slowly.
Gianluca took a leather case from inside his jacket and laid it on the white cloth between the flowers.
"I wrote four letters between April and June," he said. "I got four replies. I've carried them since."
He took out the second card.
"Lucrezia," he said. "You said last night you remember everything I received. Read this one aloud."
Lucrezia's smile held.
"Gianluca, I don't think this is the place."
"Then I'll read it."
He turned the card to the candlelight.
"Tuesday again," he read. "The lemons keep going up, and the lemonade stays the same."
A man near the middle of the table gave a small, puzzled laugh.
"It's about Miami," Lucrezia said. "The heat. It always charges more for the same sun."
"What are the lemons?" Gianluca asked.
"It's a joke."
"What do the lemons cost?"
She opened her mouth.
I heard the soft sound of my own breath, and then I said it before I could stop myself.
"Forty percent more than March."
Every head turned to me.
"The produce man raised the price of lemons by forty percent in March," I said. "My father wouldn't change the menu. So we made lemonade at a loss all spring."
