Chapter 20: The Stone

I did not drink the second flask.

It came by a servant at noon on Midwinter day, stoppered and wrapped in a clean cloth.

The Regent's note said it would help me sleep.

I poured it down the kitchen drain and watched it go.

Then I put on my good coat, took my mother's silver cup, and walked down to the Stone.

The Moot meadow lay below the keep in a bowl of hills.

At the center stood the Stone, a single gray pillar twice the height of a man, scarred with names.

Torches ringed it.

Beyond the torches stood every wolf of the Crown Pack, six hundred, in a great ring in the frost.

Beyond them, in three tight groups with their own lanterns, stood the northern packs.

They had come a long way, and they didn't speak.

An old woman sat on a camp stool at the front of the northern ring.

She was wrapped in a dun blanket, with a pipe in her mouth.

She looked at me once as I passed and took the pipe out.

"So that's the girl," she said.

Sioned stood near the Stone between two Regency guards, in chains, in her apron.

She had refused to take it off.

"I told them," she said, loudly, as I came near. "I'm not meeting the northern packs in a prison gown. I'll be hanged in my good apron."
