Chapter 16: The Parking Lot

The Kirkland and Daughter regional office is a two-story brick building behind a tire shop.

At eight on Tuesday, the lot was filling with people carrying coffee and lanyards.

I stood by the dumpster enclosure with my hands in my jacket.

Brynn stood at the foot of the front steps in her father's old coat.

She had no makeup on and no heels.

She looked smaller than I remembered.

"Thank you for coming," she said, without turning around.

"I'm only here so there's a witness."

"I know. That's why I asked."

At a quarter past, Trent's white truck pulled into the space marked for the regional manager.

He climbed out in his quarter-zip, saw her, and his face went through three expressions fast.

He chose the warm one.

"Brynn. Baby. What are you doing here?"

"Don't call me that."

"Let's go inside and talk."

"No." She held up a stack of paper. "Right here. I want your people to hear."

A woman with a lanyard stopped on the steps.

Then a man carrying a box.

Within a minute there were twenty people standing in the cold, pretending to look at their phones.

Brynn read from the top sheet in a voice that shook and kept going.

"Larkspur Linen and Supply. Delaware. Owner, Trent Sabin. It bills this company twenty-four hundred dollars every three weeks for sheets nobody ever delivered."

"Brynn."

"You told me you were a founder. You told me this was your investment. You said it was your money in the ring, and mine to keep."
