Chapter 10: Seven Stones in the Bog

Sabine's POV

Eli told me everything on the porch, in the thin sun, in four sentences.

My mother had been the Moon-Chosen.

Her word outranked every Alpha's.

My father was Alpha only because she had lent him the seat.

I stood there with my braid over my shoulder and looked at the grain of the porch rail.

"That's what you read," I said.

"Yes."

"And that's why you want me to hunt tonight."

"I want you to hunt because you asked."

"The Moon-Chosen can take back a seat from an Alpha," I said slowly. "She can rule a whole pack by saying so. Councils would want that, Eli. Wardens would want that."

He did not move.

"You're the Council's warden," I said. "You've known what I am since yesterday, and you were in my bed last night."

Something went out of his face.

It was not anger.

It was worse than anger, a quiet, careful closing.

"If that's what you believe," he said, "then take your tracker's nose and go find the stones yourself. I'll walk behind you. I won't speak, and I won't touch you, and after tomorrow you'll never have to see me again."

"I didn't say I believed it."

"You said it out loud."

"I said it because I had to hear how it sounded," I said, and my voice broke. "Everyone who has ever been kind to me wanted something. I'm not good at this, Eli. I was told for twelve years that my wolf was dead."

He looked at me for a long time.

Then he reached up and took off his Warden's pin, a small silver crescent on his collar, and put it in my palm.

"Keep that," he said. "If I use you, the Council can have my seat."

I closed my fingers around it.

It was warm from his skin.

"Tonight," I said.

"Tonight."

We left at dusk, while the rest of my pack was loading trucks for the false site.
