Chapter 17: The Policy
"My father is a lot of things," I said. "He isn't a mechanic anymore."
"He's the only one who ever learned it from me," Frank said. "That's what I'm telling you."
The inspector was already on her phone, walking toward the hangar doors.
Mitch put his hand on my back.
"Dad's place," he said. "Right now. Before the agents get there and he's gone."
"He's already gone. He'd never wait around for us."
"Then we find out where."
We reached the house in Lake Forest a little before nine.
A SOLD sign leaned in the snow by the mailbox.
The front door stood open a hand's width, and the foyer light was on.
Nobody had put the Christmas tree up this year. There was a stack of flattened moving boxes where it usually stood.
Mom was in the dining room.
