Chapter 9: The Rain
Devin was out of the car and halfway up the lane when I came down the steps.
He had seen the phone through the window, and the faces.
I did not let him say anything.
"Drive," I said. "Please. Just drive."
He drove.
We were ten minutes down the coast road before I could talk, and the sky had gone black over the lake.
"It will be online by tonight," I said. "My mother will watch it twice, and she'll smile."
"I know. I'm sorry."
"Britta was wearing my grandmother's cardigan."
"I saw it from the road. I'm so sorry."
"The letter's gone. She said my mother cleared the desk." I pressed my hands against my face. "She kissed me at dinner, and she said thank you. She said it so lightly."
"I know," Devin said quietly. "She said thank you, and you signed."
The rain started all at once, hammering on the roof.
I took my hands from my face.
I had never told him that.
What he had just said was not on any page I had read to him, and I had not said it out loud in his car.
I looked at his profile, tired and hard in the dashboard light.
I put it away carefully, in the place where I kept the things I was not ready to say.
"Stop the car," I said.
"Lydia, it's pouring."
"Stop it. Please."
He pulled onto the shoulder of Lake Road, the same road where he had found me.
The wipers beat against the glass.
I opened the door and got out into the rain.
It was cold, and it soaked me through in seconds, and I did not care.
