They Never Wanted a Female Gamma, So I Built the Pack That Beat Theirs novel · Chapter 17 of 24

Chapter 17: The Hold

Ilona wanted my team disqualified.

She stood at the rail of the judges' table in her black coat.

She told the Crown's delegates, in a calm and carrying voice, that the Culm Bank pack was not on the Pennsylvania Roll.

She said its colors had never been registered, and that its Gamma had declined the very seat she now ran under.

"It is a fraud," Ilona said.

"A pack of castoffs under a gravedigger's flag."

Matthias had not stood.

He sat at the center of the table with the ledger open in front of him, and the other delegates leaned in on either side.

He read her the rule in a mild voice.

"A pack enters the Moot by the vote of its members, witnessed by one parish officer," he said.

"The Culm Bank pack voted in a parking lot in September.

"The priest of St. Michael's has signed the witness line.

"The Crown has no rule that a pack must own land, or hold a seat, or be liked."

"It has no Gamma," Ilona said.

"It does not need one at the Run," Matthias said.

"The Moot asks that six wolves run.

"They ran."

She looked at him for a long moment.

Then she turned her head and looked across the infield at me.

I was standing at the rail twenty feet away in my blanket, with a cup of black coffee the twins had brought.
