Chapter 22: The Annual Meeting
The hotel ballroom on Grant Street held six hundred folding chairs, and by ten o'clock every one of them was taken.
Shareholders sat in the front half, in good coats.
The bank's own people filled the back half and stood along the walls: tellers, loan officers, the mailroom, the night guards in uniform.
Two cameras on tripods faced the stage for the livestream.
The nine directors sat at a long table up there under the lights, with Richard in the center seat.
The chairman's seat beside him was empty, with a name card turned face down.
Nate sat in the front row with the bundle of envelopes in his lap.
Leah sat on his left in her one good dress, and Frank sat on his right in the aisle with his brake on.
"One motion," Richard said into his microphone. "To remove the suspended chairman, Nate Mazur, from the chair and the board."
He made his case in four minutes, without notes.
