Chapter 21: Not in the Water
The names went into the water for two hours, one at a time, and the water took every one of them.
Tammy read the old families, and the hands went in around the ring, and the ripples crossed.
"The water takes," Ramiro said each time, in the flat voice, and each time the ring breathed out.
I watched the eleven.
They stood together on the far side of the pool in their oilskins, and they were waiting for a name.
It was not these names.
Lyle had told them to lift their hands for one name.
It was written at the end of the book, in the hand of a man who loved me.
When the old families were done, Tammy read the tenants.
She read them by pack, the south fork and the Tonto, the Verde and the high desert.
Every hand went in.
Even the eleven put theirs in, because two hundred people were watching their palms.
